With one foot planted in the foundation of nursing and the other stepping toward the future, I leave STTI biennial conference with a spirit of energy for planning and developing STTI's role in the community. But I am getting ahead of myself; my excitement and energy came after the shock of the company I would be keeping.Saturday, November 12. Arriving to the sea of purple, I register and begin planning my schedule by topics of the events I hope to attend. The apprehension and anticipation build as I begin with the workshop for first-time attendees. I am stunned and in awe of the people I am meeting: the authors of textbooks I use; the researchers whose work is on my many reference pages; and the deans and faculty of nursing programs from across the world. Travel tip for next conference: bring more purple. Sunday, November 13. The day begins with a phenomenal plenary session with Greta Sherman, Senior VP Healthcare (marketing) TMP (monster.com) that mapped out changes nursing will need to make for continued advancement of the profession. The solution she presented was radical: change the face of nursing by changing the title of the profession. Ms. Sherman detailed problems the profession faces – poor public and internal perception mixed with weak product identity. Ms. Sherman's council had every person weighing in with an opinion about her clarity and sanity. The remainder of the day was dedicated to history. The Audrey Hepburn luncheon highlighted the essence of Audrey's work in the health and welfare of the world's children. The reminiscing continued with the Founders' Banquet. The spirit of each founder was represented in an award presented to nurses exemplifying excellence in nursing: Nursing Practice, Fostering Professional Standards, Leadership, Creativity, Research, Education, and Chapter Programming. The event was attended by the sons of founder Mary Tolle. The Indianapolis Colts win (9-0) and remain undefeated for the season. The RCA Dome where they play is attached to the conference center and the sea of purple is challenged by an ocean of blue. Monday, November 14.
Tuesday, November 15. Learning, sharing ideas, working to design a better nursing for the future, I am elevated on the shoulders of exceptional nurses that are shaping today's profession and are preparing for nursing's future. This is where my energy, thoughts, and ideas peak in a frenzy of mentorship and support. I want to thank Gamma Tau and my mentors: Bonnie Faherty, Mikel Hand, and Ellen McFadden for the sponsorship and opportunity to experience this powerful event of nursing leadership, mentorship, and renewal: thank you, thank you, thank you. |
